About this checklist

This checklist covers all major phases of a camper van conversion. It's based on common build practices and community experience from thousands of DIY builds.

How to use this checklist

Work through the categories roughly in order — some overlap is normal. Mark items as completed as you go. Your progress is saved automatically in your browser. Use the filters to focus on essential steps or filter by difficulty level.

Essential vs optional

Essential items are the minimum for a functional, safe camper. Optional items add comfort and convenience. Every build is different — what's optional for one person may be essential for another.

Difficulty levels

Easy: no special tools or skills needed. Medium: requires some DIY experience and common power tools. Hard: requires specialist knowledge, tools, or should be done by a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full camper van conversion take?

Most DIY builds take 3-6 months of weekends and evenings. A simple build can be done in 4-6 weeks of full-time work. Complex builds with custom furniture and full electrical systems can take 6-12 months.

What order should I build in?

Generally: strip and clean, rust treatment, insulation, flooring, electrical (rough-in cables), walls and ceiling, furniture, then finishing (plumbing, lighting, details). But some steps overlap — for example, cable routes need to be planned before wall panels go up.

Can I do the electrical system myself?

12V DC systems are manageable for confident DIYers with proper research. Shore power (230V/110V AC) connections should ideally be done or inspected by a qualified electrician. Always use properly rated cables, fuses and components.

Do I need to register my conversion?

Requirements vary by country. In the Netherlands, you need an RDW inspection (see our RDW Checklist). In the UK, you may need a DVLA reclassification. In Germany, a TUV inspection. Check your local regulations before starting.

In what order should I build my camper?

Start with rust treatment and insulation, then floor, electrics (running cables), furniture, plumbing and finally finishing. Electrical cables need to go in before wall panels.

How long does a camper conversion take?

A complete conversion takes most DIYers 3-6 months of weekends and evenings. Full-time work can be done in 4-8 weeks. Don't underestimate finishing, it often takes as long as the rough build.

This checklist is a general guide. Every build is different — adapt it to your specific van and needs.
