How does the space calculator work?

The space calculator computes the floor area, volume and wall surface of your van based on a van model or custom dimensions. It gives you quick insight into the available space for your layout.

Volume and area calculation

The volume is calculated as: length × width × height. The floor area is length × width, and the ceiling area equals the floor area. The wall area covers two side walls and the rear wall: (2 × length × height) + (width × height). The front wall (bulkhead to the cab) is shown separately.

Crosswise sleeping

The maximum body height for crosswise sleeping is calculated as: interior width minus 5 cm margin for the mattress and wall. Crosswise sleeping is practically feasible from about 1.60 m interior width. In narrower vans (such as a VW Transporter), you must sleep lengthwise.

Frequently asked questions

From what width can I sleep crosswise?

For comfortable crosswise sleeping you need at least 1.80 m interior width (for a person of 1.75 m). Vans like the Fiat Ducato (1.87 m wide) and Sprinter (1.78 m) are suitable.

How do I measure my own van?

Measure the cargo area from the bulkhead to the rear doors (length), between the wheel arches or at the widest point (width), and from the floor to the highest point (height). Re-measure after any insulation, as insulation takes up 2–5 cm per side. Use our pre-filled van models as a starting point.

How much space do I need for a bed?

A double bed needs at least 130×190cm. A crosswise bed only fits in vans wider than 170cm internally (e.g. Ducato, Transit). In narrower vans the bed must go lengthwise.

Which van has the most cargo space?

The Fiat Ducato L3H2 has the largest cargo volume in the popular category (~13m³). The Mercedes Sprinter L3H2 and Iveco Daily L3H2 are comparable.

How much standing height do I need?

Most people need at least 190cm standing height. An H2 (high roof) van gives about 185-195cm after floor and insulation. H3 gives more margin.

Should I account for insulation thickness?

Yes, insulation takes 3-5cm per wall. A 180cm wide van leaves about 170cm after insulation. The space calculator does not account for this.

Dimensions are approximate. Always measure your own van for accurate results.
