How does the cost calculator work?
The cost calculator keeps track of all costs for your camper van conversion. For each component you enter the price and quantity, and the tool calculates the total per category and the final amount including VAT.
Calculation
For each line the subtotal is calculated as: price × quantity. All subtotals are summed to produce the subtotal excluding VAT. The VAT amount is: subtotal × VAT percentage / 100. The grand total including VAT is the sum of both. You can choose from 0%, 9% (reduced rate) or 21% (standard rate).
Categories
All costs are divided across eight categories: electrics, water and plumbing, furniture and interior, insulation and finishing, climate and heating, gas, exterior and other. The category breakdown gives a clear overview of where your budget is going, so you can adjust spending where needed.
VAT on camper van conversions
As a private individual you usually buy materials including 21% VAT. The reduced rate of 9% applies to certain labour and specific services. When purchasing through trade suppliers or buying second-hand materials, the VAT rate may differ. The tool lets you set the rate so you get an accurate estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay VAT on my conversion as a private individual?
Yes — as a private individual you pay VAT on all materials and parts you buy. This is usually 21%. You cannot reclaim this VAT. Only if you have a business and use the vehicle commercially can you deduct VAT under certain conditions.
Which costs should I include?
Think of insulation, wood and fixings, electrics (batteries, cables, solar panels), water (tanks, pump, tap), kitchen (cooker, fridge), furniture, heating, ventilation and the inspection fee. Do not forget tools, paint and small consumables — these add up surprisingly fast.
