How does the payload checker work?

The payload checker calculates whether your camper van conversion fits within the maximum permitted payload of your vehicle. The tool compares the total weight of your build, passengers and luggage against the available payload.

Calculation

The maximum payload is calculated as: GVW (gross vehicle weight) minus the kerb weight of the van. The total added weight is the sum of the build weight, passenger weight (75 kg per person, EU standard) and estimated luggage. The remaining payload is the difference between the maximum payload and the total added weight.

Status assessment

The tool gives three status levels: green (safely within limits), amber (close to the limit — consider reducing weight) and red (overloaded). When overloaded, the tool shows by how many kilograms you exceed the limit. Overloading is dangerous, illegal and can result in fines from 130 to over 1,300 euros.

GVW upgrade

If your payload is too tight, some vehicles can be upgraded to a higher GVW. This increases the maximum permitted weight, giving you more payload. The upgrade must be approved by the manufacturer or importer and registered with the vehicle authority. Since July 2025, you may drive up to 4,250 kg with a category B licence in the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GVW upgrade and how do I apply for one?

A GVW upgrade (technically: mass increase) raises the maximum permitted total weight of your vehicle. You apply through the manufacturer or importer of your van. They assess whether the chassis, brakes and suspension can handle the higher weight. After approval, the new GVW is recorded on the registration certificate.

Why does the tool use 75 kg per person?

The RDW and EU regulations use 75 kg as the standard weight per occupant when calculating payload. This includes hand luggage. Actual passenger weight may differ, but 75 kg is the official standard.

What happens if I am overloaded?

Overloading is illegal and dangerous. At a roadside check you risk fines from 130 euros (up to 5% over) to more than 1,300 euros (over 30%). Additionally, your insurance may not pay out in case of an accident, and your brakes and tyres are not rated for the higher weight.

What is the difference between GVW and kerb weight?

GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is the maximum allowed weight including everything. Kerb weight is the van as it comes from the factory. The difference is your payload.

Can I exceed my payload?

No, that's dangerous and illegal. Your insurance may not pay out in an accident. During a check you risk a fine and driving ban.

Always verify the actual GVW and kerb weight on your registration certificate or with the RDW.
