How does the RDW Conversion Checklist work?
The RDW Conversion Checklist is an interactive list of all known requirements for converting a van to a motorhome in the Netherlands. The checklist distinguishes between RDW and Tax Authority requirements, so you know exactly what each authority inspects.
Progress per category
Items are grouped into categories: interior and dimensions, seating and table, sleeping, kitchen, water, storage, electrics, gas, ventilation, weight and documents. For each category you can see how many items are checked off and how many remain. Required items are counted separately for a clear view of your progress.
RDW versus Tax Authority
Not all requirements come from the same authority. The RDW assesses technical safety and interior layout during the individual approval. The Tax Authority sets additional requirements for fiscal recognition as a motorhome (such as minimum dimensions). Some requirements apply to both authorities. The checklist marks which authority sets each requirement.
Optional items
Not all items are mandatory. Gas installation requirements, for example, only apply if you actually have a gas installation. A pop-up roof is an alternative for the standing height requirement. The checklist distinguishes between required and optional items so you can filter on what you actually need.

How long does an RDW inspection take?
The inspection itself usually takes 1 to 2 hours. However, the lead time from application to approval is longer: allow 4 to 8 weeks depending on the inspection station and how busy they are. Plan your inspection well in advance and make sure everything is complete to avoid delays.
Which documents do I need to bring?
Bring: the original vehicle registration certificate, a valid form of ID, proof of BPM payment or exemption, ECE-R10 certificates for all electrical components, and if applicable the ECE-R122 certificate for a heater. Technical drawings or photos of the conversion are recommended.
How much does an RDW inspection cost?
The cost of an individual approval at an approved inspection station (such as TUV or Dekra) ranges from 500 to 1,500 euros. This excludes the BPM and any costs for modifications if the vehicle does not pass on the first attempt. Request a quote in advance.
When do I contact the Tax Authority?
You contact the Tax Authority before re-registration. You file a BPM return and pay the amount due. Only after receiving proof of payment can you proceed with the RDW inspection and re-registration. The Tax Authority checks whether the vehicle meets the fiscal requirements for a motorhome.
What does an RDW conversion inspection cost?
The inspection costs approximately €150-€200 (2024). Additionally you pay for a new registration document. Check current rates on the RDW website.
