How does the water consumption calculator work?

The calculator estimates your daily fresh water consumption based on activities. Combined with off-grid duration and a safety reserve, it recommends an appropriate tank size.

Per-person vs. shared activities

Activities like showering and drinking scale with the number of people. Others, like cooking and washing dishes, are typically shared. The calculator multiplies per-person activities by the number of travellers.

Tank sizing

Total required = daily consumption × days × (1 + reserve%). The recommended tank is the smallest standard size that meets this requirement. Standard sizes: 25L, 30L, 40L, 50L, 60L, 70L, 80L, 100L, 120L, 150L, 200L.

Weight consideration

Water weighs 1 kg per liter. A full 100L tank adds 100 kg to your vehicle. This significantly affects payload, handling, and fuel consumption. Consider filling partially when weight is a concern.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do 2 people use per day in a camper van?

On average 25-40 liters per day, depending on habits. With water-saving measures (Navy showers, basin washing) you can get below 20 liters.

What is a Navy shower?

Wet yourself briefly, turn off water, soap up, then rinse. Uses 5-8 liters instead of 20+. Very common among long-term travellers.

Do I need separate fresh and grey water tanks?

Yes. Grey water (used water from sink and shower) must be collected separately. Many countries prohibit dumping grey water on the ground. Size your grey water tank at least 75% of your fresh water tank.

Can I drink the water from my tank?

Only if you use food-safe tanks, clean regularly, and use a proper water filter. Many camper van builders use a separate drinking water container with a filter for drinking and cooking.

How can I save water?

Use a foot pump (controls flow), take Navy showers, wash dishes in a basin, reuse cooking water, install a low-flow tap aerator, and consider a water recycling system for the shower.

Should I account for the weight of water?

Yes, water weighs 1 kg per litre. A full 100-litre tank adds 100 kg to your van. Factor this into your payload calculation.

This calculation is indicative. Actual consumption depends on personal habits and water-saving measures.
