Overview

Add components to calculate the total weight.

How does the weight calculator work?

The weight calculator adds up the weight of every component in your conversion. It gives you a clear picture of the total weight so you can avoid exceeding your maximum payload.

Calculation

For each component the subtotal is calculated as: weight × quantity. The total weight is the sum of all subtotals. Components are divided into five categories: furniture, electrics, water, insulation and other. This lets you see at a glance where most of the weight comes from.

What does a typical conversion weigh?

An average camper van conversion adds 300 to 600 kg to the kerb weight of the base vehicle. The heaviest items are usually the bed frame, kitchen unit, batteries, water tanks and insulation. By calculating in advance you can make informed choices — for example, lithium batteries (lighter) instead of AGM, or aluminium furniture instead of plywood.

Kerb weight and payload

The kerb weight on your registration certificate is the weight of the empty vehicle including fluids and tools. Your available payload is the GVW (gross vehicle weight) minus the kerb weight. Everything you install, plus passengers and luggage, must fit within that payload allowance.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy is an average camper van conversion?

A basic conversion (bed, simple kitchen, insulation) weighs 200–350 kg. A full conversion with a fixed shower, large battery bank and plenty of furniture can reach 500–700 kg. Keep in mind that passengers, luggage and water are added on top of that.

What is included in the kerb weight?

The kerb weight on the registration certificate includes the vehicle with all standard equipment, full fluids (oil, coolant), a full fuel tank and standard tools. The driver (75 kg) is not included.

How can I save weight on my conversion?

Use lightweight materials: plywood or paulownia instead of MDF, aluminium profiles, LiFePO4 batteries instead of AGM (up to 60% lighter). Choose a compact water tank and avoid unnecessary furniture. Weigh every part before you install it.

How much does an average camper conversion weigh?

A complete conversion typically weighs 300-600 kg, depending on materials. Plywood furniture, insulation, electrics and water make up the bulk.

How can I save weight?

Use poplar plywood instead of birch, choose LiFePO4 instead of AGM (halves battery weight), and consider flexible solar panels. Every kilo counts for payload.
