How does the weight calculator work?
The weight calculator adds up the weight of every component in your conversion. It gives you a clear picture of the total weight so you can avoid exceeding your maximum payload.
Calculation
For each component the subtotal is calculated as: weight × quantity. The total weight is the sum of all subtotals. Components are divided into five categories: furniture, electrics, water, insulation and other. This lets you see at a glance where most of the weight comes from.
What does a typical conversion weigh?
An average camper van conversion adds 300 to 600 kg to the kerb weight of the base vehicle. The heaviest items are usually the bed frame, kitchen unit, batteries, water tanks and insulation. By calculating in advance you can make informed choices — for example, lithium batteries (lighter) instead of AGM, or aluminium furniture instead of plywood.
Kerb weight and payload
The kerb weight on your registration certificate is the weight of the empty vehicle including fluids and tools. Your available payload is the GVW (gross vehicle weight) minus the kerb weight. Everything you install, plus passengers and luggage, must fit within that payload allowance.
