Building camper van furniture: wood, weight and tips
The interior is where you'll spend the most time during a camper van conversion. Well-built furniture makes the difference between a van you sleep in and a van you live in. In this guide we discuss materials, construction techniques and smart ways to save weight.

Which wood for camper van furniture?
The most important material choice for camper van furniture is the board material:
Poplar plywood is the lightest (~400 kg/m³). Soft wood, easy to work with. 12 mm is the minimum thickness for load-bearing structures. Ideal when weight is the priority. Downside: softer surface, more prone to dents.
Birch plywood is stronger and harder (~680 kg/m³). The professional choice. 9 mm birch is comparable in strength to 12 mm poplar. Better surface finish, can be left untreated. Downside: 70% heavier than poplar.
Okoumé plywood sits in the middle ground for weight (~500 kg/m³). Good moisture resistance. Popular with boat builders and therefore also suitable for camper vans.
**Avoid:** MDF (too heavy, not moisture resistant), chipboard (breaks with vibrations, swells with moisture), solid wood (too heavy, warps with temperature changes).
Always choose WBP-glued plywood (Water and Boil Proof) for moisture resistance.
Construction techniques: strong and light
Camper van furniture must withstand vibrations, impacts and temperature changes. Here are proven construction methods:
Pocket hole joinery is the most popular method among DIY builders. With a Kreg Jig you make angled screw holes that are invisible on the outside. Fast, strong and no clamps needed.
Dowel or biscuit joints are neater and stronger than screws, but require more tools and experience.
Corner brackets and L-profiles are the simplest method. Aluminium angle profiles (20×20 mm) are light and strong. Less attractive but reliable.
Frame + panel: build a light frame of battens (30×30 mm) and clad with thin panels (4-6 mm). Lighter than solid boards but labour-intensive.
Always attach furniture to the body with through-bolt connections or bonding plates (glued reinforcement plates). Screws into single sheet metal won't hold under vibrations.
Saving weight on furniture
Furniture is often the heaviest item after batteries. Here are concrete savings:
**Material:**
• Poplar instead of birch plywood: ~40% weight saving
• 9 mm instead of 12 mm where possible: ~25% saving
• Honeycomb panels for non-load-bearing surfaces (doors, side panels): up to 60% lighter
**Construction:**
• Use open shelves instead of closed cabinets where possible
• Make doors from 4 mm plywood with a frame — lighter than solid doors
• Use aluminium instead of wooden frames for the bed
• Avoid unnecessary dividing walls
**Reference weights per item:**
• Kitchen unit: 15-25 kg
• Bed frame: 15-30 kg
• Dinette/seating area: 10-20 kg
• Overhead cabinets (each): 3-8 kg
• Wardrobe: 8-15 kg
Total furniture: 60-120 kg for a lightweight build, 100-200 kg for a standard build.
Finishing and protection
Untreated plywood is vulnerable to moisture and dirt. Here are the options:
Hardwax oil (e.g. Osmo, Rubio Monocoat) is the most popular choice among camper van builders. It penetrates the wood, protects against moisture and dirt, and maintains the natural look. 2-3 coats, easy to touch up.
Varnish (water-based) offers better moisture protection than oil, but is harder to repair when damaged. Makes the surface smoother.
HPL laminate is a thin, hard surface glued onto plywood. Scratch-resistant and waterproof. Poplar plywood is available pre-finished with HPL.
Film or vinyl wrapping is the cheapest option. Easy to apply, many colours/patterns available. Can peel off in heat.
Tip: treat the undersides and insides of cabinets too — moisture comes from all directions. One coat of hardwax oil on hidden surfaces is sufficient.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does camper van furniture weigh?
- With a lightweight build using poplar plywood: 60-120 kg total. With a standard build using birch plywood: 100-200 kg. The biggest items are the bed (15-30 kg) and kitchen (15-25 kg).
- What thickness plywood for camper van furniture?
- For load-bearing structures: minimum 12 mm poplar or 9 mm birch. For non-load-bearing panels (doors, side walls): 4-6 mm is sufficient. Always use WBP-glued plywood.
- How do I attach furniture in a camper van?
- Attach furniture to the body ribs with through-bolt connections, or use construction adhesive with bonding plates. Screws into single sheet metal alone won't hold under vibrations.
