How does the weight calculator work?

The weight calculator adds up the weight of every component in your conversion. It gives you a clear picture of the total weight so you can avoid exceeding your maximum payload.

Calculation

For each component the subtotal is calculated as: weight × quantity. The total weight is the sum of all subtotals. Components are divided into five categories: furniture, electrics, water, insulation and other. This lets you see at a glance where most of the weight comes from.

What does a typical conversion weigh?

An average RV conversion adds 660–1,320 lbs (300–600 kg) to the curb weight of the base vehicle. The heaviest items are usually the bed frame, kitchen unit, batteries, water tanks and insulation. By calculating in advance you can make informed choices — for example, lithium batteries (lighter) instead of AGM, or aluminum furniture instead of plywood.

Curb weight and payload

The curb weight on your vehicle registration is the weight of the empty vehicle including fluids and tools. Your available payload is the GVW (gross vehicle weight) minus the curb weight. Everything you install, plus passengers and luggage, must fit within that payload allowance.

How heavy is an average RV conversion?

A basic conversion (bed, simple kitchen, insulation) weighs 440–770 lbs (200–350 kg). A full conversion with a fixed shower, large battery bank and plenty of furniture can reach 1,100–1,540 lbs (500–700 kg). Keep in mind that passengers, luggage and water are added on top of that.

What is included in the curb weight?

The curb weight on the vehicle registration includes the vehicle with all standard equipment, full fluids (oil, coolant), a full fuel tank and standard tools. The driver (165 lbs / 75 kg) is not included.

How can I save weight on my conversion?

Use lightweight materials: plywood or paulownia instead of MDF, aluminum profiles, LiFePO4 batteries instead of AGM (up to 60% lighter). Choose a compact water tank and avoid unnecessary furniture. Weigh every part before you install it.
